EXCITING AND INSPIRING WORKSHOP: CHANGE THE MINDSET!
“Long life learning” is a motto of every teacher. So, to learn more about ESP teaching, lecturers of PKPBI UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang held a workshop on ESP on Friday, December 15th 2017. The theme of the workshop was “Changing the Mindset in the Teaching World” with Mr. Jasmin Samat Simon from Ma Chung University as the speaker. The workshop focused on changing the lecturers’ mindset on teaching using two key points that should be built in the classroom, those are TRUST and ENVIRONMENT. Mr. Jasmin emphasized that “a lecturer is also an environmentalist” which means English lecturers should be able to build the enjoyable and communicative English learning environment. As the attendees, the lecturers were also engaged in some games and activities that could be applied in the classroom. By experiencing to be in the students’ shoes, it was expected that the lecturers could get clearer ideas on how to appropriately treat and teach the students as the English foreign language learners. Through changing the mindset of how students should learn, lecturers can find the best way to create a pleasant learning environment. “Learning English should be a joy, not a burden” this is a challenging job of English lecturers especially those who teach ESP since they must be the bridge between the target language and the field of study learned by the students. As a monthly agenda, workshop or seminar like this is very crucial to enrich the lecturers’ knowledge about teaching. Can’t wait for the next workshop, right?
