Workshop on Language Testing: Technology-Mediated Learning for Digital-Divide ESP Classrooms

ELC under the auspices of the Language Center of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang held a workshop on Language Testing entitled Technology-Mediated Learning for Digital-Divide ESP Classrooms. This workshop was held on February 20, 2020, at 8 am, on the 3rd floor of the Rectorate Building. This event was opened by Prof. Dr. Abdul Haris, M.Ag, the Rector of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. He was accompanied by Dr. H. M. Abdul Hamid, the Director of the Language Center and Dr. Syamsudin, the Chief of ELC giving a welcoming speech to all of the audiences.

In this event, there were 5 presenters who delivered their materials related to technology used in teaching. The first presenter was Nissa Ilma Mukti, M.Ed. (TESOL). She presented a material about applying technology-mediated learning for TESOL pre-service teachers. It was about people’s ability to make use of the device and the Internet to engage in meaningful social practices. The second presenter was Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono, Ph.D., presenting a material about applying the TPACK framework for ESP coursework. He presented how media were used in the teaching and learning process. The third presenter was Dr. Shirly Rizki Kusumaningrum, M.Pd. with her material about QR code hunt: an alternative activity for a more engaging ESP classroom. She offered a teaching and learning process using QR code that could be used by students to get their tasks.

The forth presenter was Drs. Basri, M.A., Ph.D. with his material entitled Incorporating Islamic Values in ESP Classroom. With his topic “Enriching English Material through Islamic Values”, he correlated the teaching and learning process of English with Islamic values in which it is suitable for the situation where lectures are teaching students at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, as the Islamic campus. It means that Islamic values should be implemented in the teaching-learning process in the Islamic campus.

The last presenter was Nanang Zubaidi, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. With his material entitled Google Classroom-ing: Transforming Your Classroom into a Truly Digital Learning Space, he explained how to utilize Google Classroom in teaching in which a teacher and students could interact using the application covering giving, discussing, and submitting a task and grading and giving feedback.

Finally, the seminar was closed by Dr. Syamsudin and he remarked that all lectures were expected to be able to increase knowledge related to digital media and utilize them well in the teaching and learning process.
